🌿 The Great Exchange: Beauty for Ashes 🌿

One of the most powerful themes in Scripture is exchange—God taking what is broken, ruined, or weighed down by sin, and giving us something entirely new in return. The Bible shows over and over that Jesus doesn’t just improve our lives… He exchanges them.

💛 Beauty for Ashes
Isaiah 61:3 says God will give us “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.”
Ashes represent the remnants of a life burned down—pain, mistakes, shame, addiction, heartbreak, bondage.
But God doesn’t leave us there.
Through Christ, He takes the ashes of our old life and exchanges them for beauty—purpose, redemption, new identity, healing, and hope.

💧 Old Life for New Life in Christ
The New Testament shows this divine exchange clearly:
• “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” —2 Corinthians 5:17
• “You were taught… to put off your old self… and to put on the new self, created to be like God.” —Ephesians 4:22–24

Salvation isn’t about adding God to our old life—it’s about laying down the old to receive the new.
We surrender the brokenness, sin, habits, lies, and self-made identity we once carried.
In return, Jesus gives His righteousness, His peace, His joy, His power, and His Spirit.

The most important step to proper exchange is learning about what it means to become a new creation. A great story to glean from at the beginning of your journey is in John 3.

John 3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

🔥 What This Exchange Requires
The exchange is free, but it isn’t passive. Scripture teaches that stepping into new life requires:

1. A Surrendering of the Old Man
This begins with being humbled and being willing to lay down old mindsets, old habits, old patterns, old beliefs. You are bringing your ashes to Him. Your old patterns. Your old ways. Your old identity.
Jesus said:
“Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Me.” —Luke 9:23

2. Repentance
Repentance isn’t punishment—it’s the doorway to transformation. Repentance is a cleansing and can be so refreshing when NOT coupled with guilt and condemnation, but a heart desiring to please your Heavenly Father. A knowing that His ways are not your ways and His thoughts are Higher. When you are settled in the FACT that your Heavenly Father loves you unconditionally, you grow in the desire to walk in His ways and you grow in acceptance of this.
Acts 3:19:
“Repent… that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”

3. Renewal of the Mind
Romans 12:2 tells us transformation comes as we renew our minds in God’s truths.
We cannot put on the new life while thinking with the old mindset. Keep in mind everything that is being transformed in us is for our good and His Glory. We can now begin to revel in the fact that He is taking something broken and making it new. 2 Corinthians says we are a new creation. All old things have passed away; behold, ALL things have become new. Isaiah 43:18-19 tells us to forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not see it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

4. Daily Exchange
Even as believers, the exchange continues:
• Fear → His peace
• Shame → His forgiveness
• Weakness → His strength
• Control → His Lordship
• Worry → His rest

Jesus invites us daily to lay down what is heavy so He can replace it:
“Come to Me… and I will give you rest.” —Matthew 11:28

Over the coming weeks, we will break down the different exchanges so we can begin to work out of us those old ways of thinking and put on the NEW MAN and the NEW MIND, which is the mind of Christ.

🌟 The Result?
A life that reflects His glory.
A testimony that says, “God can redeem anything.”
A heart clothed in the garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness.

The great exchange is not just a one-time moment—it is the ongoing miracle of walking with Christ.
